A driveway is a big surface that takes weather, weight, and freeze-thaw abuse. A little maintenance adds years and keeps it from becoming an expensive replacement.
Seal cracks early
Water getting into cracks freezes, expands, and widens them. Filling cracks as they appear, on both asphalt and concrete, is the single most important maintenance task for longevity.
Seal the surface
Asphalt benefits from periodic sealcoating (every few years, not too often) to protect against UV and water. Concrete sealers resist stains and freeze-thaw damage. Clean the surface and repair cracks before sealing.
Manage water and weight
Keep water draining off the driveway and away from its edges, since undermined edges crack and sink. Avoid parking very heavy vehicles on thin residential slabs, and clear snow with a plastic-edged shovel to avoid gouging.
