Gutter guards promise to end gutter cleaning, but the reality is more nuanced. They reduce cleaning, especially under heavy tree cover, but don't eliminate maintenance entirely.

The types

Mesh and micro-mesh screens block leaves while letting water through, and are among the more effective types. Reverse-curve (surface-tension) guards direct water around a nose while leaves fall off. Foam and brush inserts are cheap and DIY-friendly but clog more over time.

What they do and don't do

Good guards dramatically cut how often you clean gutters and reduce clogs and ice dams, which protects your foundation and fascia. But fine debris, shingle grit, and pollen still accumulate, so occasional cleaning is still needed — 'maintenance-free' is marketing.

Are they worth it?

Under heavy tree cover or on a tall or hard-to-access home, quality guards can be worth the cost by reducing dangerous ladder work. On a single-storey home with few trees, simple regular cleaning may be more economical.
