Hardwood floors last generations if cared for, and can be refinished rather than replaced. The enemies are grit, moisture, and the wrong cleaners.
Clean the right way
Sweep or vacuum regularly — grit acts like sandpaper underfoot. Clean with a barely damp mop and a cleaner made for hardwood. Avoid water, vinegar, and steam mops, which dull or damage the finish over time.
Protect the finish
Felt pads under furniture legs prevent scratches, mats at entries catch grit and moisture, and area rugs protect high-traffic paths. Keep pet nails trimmed. Wipe spills promptly — standing water swells and stains wood.
Refinish when needed
When the finish is worn but the wood is sound, a screen-and-recoat refreshes it. Deeper wear or damage calls for a full sand-and-refinish, which can be done several times over a solid floor's life.
