A fire pit makes a backyard a gathering place, and a basic one is a doable weekend project. Safety and local rules matter as much as looks, so start by checking what's allowed.

Check rules and location

Many municipalities regulate or ban backyard fires, and fire bans are common in BC summers — check local bylaws first. Site the pit well away from the house, fences, trees, and overhanging branches, on level non-combustible ground, with clearance all around.

Build it

A simple pit is a ring of fire-rated blocks or a metal fire ring on a base of gravel or sand, sized for the space. Use materials rated for heat — ordinary concrete and some stones can crack or even explode when heated. A gravel or paver surround keeps grass and embers separated.

Use it safely

Keep a hose or water bucket and a shovel nearby, never leave a fire unattended, burn only clean, dry wood (not garbage or treated wood), and fully extinguish and stir the ashes before leaving. Watch for wind that carries embers.
