A freshly painted front door is one of the cheapest, highest-impact curb-appeal upgrades. Because it takes weather and handling, prep and a durable paint matter for a finish that lasts.

Prep and remove hardware

Clean the door, sand glossy or worn areas so paint grips, and fill any dents. Remove the handle, knocker, and hardware (or tape them) for a clean result. Take the door off its hinges and lay it flat if you want the smoothest finish, or paint it in place.

Paint in order

On a panel door, paint in a logical order: recessed panels first, then the rails and stiles (the horizontal and vertical flat sections), following the grain. Work in thin coats and keep a wet edge to avoid lap marks. Use an exterior paint rated for doors.

Let it cure

Two thin coats give the best colour and durability. Let the paint dry fully before closing the door against the weatherstripping, or it can stick and peel. Pick a dry, mild day and avoid painting in direct hot sun.
