Replacing a light fixture is one of the more approachable electrical jobs, but electricity demands respect. The golden rule: kill the power at the breaker and verify it's off before touching any wires.
Cut the power
Turn off the breaker for that circuit — not just the wall switch — and use a non-contact voltage tester to confirm the wires are dead before you touch them. Never rely on the switch alone.
Note the wiring
Most fixtures connect black (hot) to black, white (neutral) to white, and the bare or green ground to the box or fixture ground. Take a photo of the existing connections before disconnecting so you can match them.
Mount and connect
Support the new fixture while you connect the wires with proper connectors, tuck them neatly into the box, and secure the fixture to the mounting bracket. Restore power and test.
Know your limits
If the box is loose, the wiring is aluminum or knob-and-tube, or you find scorched wires, stop and call an electrician. Heavy fixtures need a fan-rated or properly supported box.
