A healthy lawn comes down to a few consistent habits, not constant work. Get the basics right and the grass largely takes care of itself.
Mow high and often
Cut grass on the taller side and never remove more than a third of the blade at once. Taller grass shades out weeds and grows deeper roots. Keep mower blades sharp — torn grass tips brown and invite disease.
Water deeply, less often
Infrequent, deep watering encourages deep roots, while daily light watering keeps roots shallow and weak. Water early in the morning so the lawn dries during the day, reducing disease.
Feed and aerate
Fertilize in spring and fall for steady growth. Aerating compacted soil once a year lets water, air, and nutrients reach the roots, and overseeding thin spots keeps the lawn thick enough to crowd out weeds.
