Good outdoor lighting improves safety, security, and curb appeal. A mix of lighting types, rather than one harsh floodlight, gives the best result.
Layer the lighting
Combine security lighting (motion-activated at entries and dark corners), pathway lighting for safe footing, and accent lighting to highlight trees, architecture, or a front door. Layering avoids the glare and dark shadows of a single bright light.
Low-voltage and solar
Low-voltage (12V) landscape lighting is safe and DIY-friendly, running on a transformer plugged into a GFCI outlet. Solar path lights need no wiring at all, though they're dimmer and depend on sun exposure. Line-voltage fixtures and new outdoor circuits need a licensed electrician.
Be a good neighbour
Aim lights down and shield them to light what you intend without glare or light trespass onto neighbours or the night sky. Warm-coloured, appropriately bright fixtures look better and reduce harshness.
