A refrigerator runs constantly and is one of the bigger energy users in a home. A little maintenance keeps it efficient, prevents breakdowns, and extends its life.
Clean the coils
The condenser coils (behind or beneath the fridge) shed heat, and when they're caked in dust the fridge works harder and runs hotter. Vacuuming or brushing the coils a couple of times a year is the single best maintenance task for efficiency and longevity.
Check the door seals
Worn or dirty door gaskets let cold air leak out, making the fridge run constantly. Clean the seals, and test them by closing the door on a piece of paper — if it slides out easily, the seal is weak and should be cleaned or replaced.
Set the right temperature
Keep the fridge around 3–4°C and the freezer around -18°C for food safety and efficiency — colder than needed just wastes energy. Keep the fridge reasonably full (but not blocking vents) so it holds temperature well.
