A retaining wall holds back soil that wants to move downhill. If your yard has a slope you want to flatten, a driveway edge that keeps sloughing, or a foundation with grade pushing against it, a wall is often the fix. Built right, a wall lasts 30 to 50 years. Built wrong, it starts leaning within two or three freeze-thaw seasons, and rebuilding costs more than doing it properly the first time.

When you actually need a retaining wall

You need one when soil is creeping onto a usable surface, when a slope is too steep to mow or plant, or when you want to create flat, usable yard space on a grade. You may also need one to protect a structure: a garage pad, a driveway, or a septic field that sits below a bank. If soil is just slowly settling on a gentle slope, regrading and planting may be cheaper and good enough. A wall is for grades that will keep moving without structural help.

Material options and where each makes sense

Segmental block (Allan Block, Pisa, and similar) is the most common residential choice. It is modular, handles frost movement well, and installs without mortar. Poured concrete is the strongest option and makes sense for tall walls or tight spaces, but it needs proper footings below frost depth and costs the most. Pressure-treated timber is the cheapest up front but has the shortest life, typically 15 to 25 years before rot takes the ties. Boulder or rock walls suit rural properties with machine access, and they drain naturally, but they eat up more yard depth because of their batter (the lean-back angle).

In most of Canada, freeze-thaw is the deciding factor. Materials that can flex slightly (block, boulder) tolerate frost heave better than rigid walls on shallow footings.

Drainage behind the wall is everything

Most failed walls fail because of water, not weight. Saturated soil behind a wall can double or triple the pressure on it, and when that water freezes it expands and shoves the wall outward. A proper build includes clear crushed gravel backfill (not native soil) directly behind the wall, a perforated drain pipe at the base sloped to daylight or a drain, and filter fabric to keep fines out of the gravel. If a contractor's quote does not itemize drain rock and a weeping tile behind the wall, that is a red flag. Ask where the drain pipe exits. If they cannot answer, keep looking.

Height thresholds, engineers, and permits

Most Canadian municipalities require an engineered design and a building permit once a wall exceeds roughly 1 m to 1.2 m of exposed height, though the exact threshold varies, so call your local building department before you dig. Some cities also count terraced walls as one tall wall if the tiers are too close together, which catches a lot of people off guard. Walls near property lines, driveways, or structures may need engineering even below the threshold. Expect an engineer's design and field review to add $1,500 to $4,000 to the project.

What it costs and how to hire well

Priced per square foot of wall face, expect roughly $30 to $60 for segmental block, $40 to $80 for poured concrete, $20 to $40 for timber, and $25 to $50 for boulder walls, depending on access, height, and region. Excavation, disposal of native soil, and drainage materials should all be in the quote. A good contractor will talk about base preparation and compaction before they talk about which block colour you want, will show you walls they built more than five years ago, and will put drainage details in writing. Get three quotes, and be suspicious of the lowest one if it skips excavation depth, base gravel thickness, or drainage. Those are exactly the corners that get cut.
