Drafty doors and windows leak heated and cooled air, driving up bills and creating cold spots. Weatherstripping is one of the cheapest, fastest energy upgrades a homeowner can do.
Find the leaks
On a windy day, feel around door and window edges for drafts, or hold a thin ribbon or incense stick near the gaps and watch for movement. Door bottoms and the sides of older windows are common culprits.
Choose the right product
Adhesive foam tape is easy for window sashes and door stops. V-strip works on door and window jambs. A door sweep or new threshold seal handles the gap under an exterior door, often the biggest single leak.
Apply and check
Clean the surface so the adhesive sticks, cut strips to length, and press them on so the door or window closes against a snug seal without being hard to shut. Recheck for drafts when done.
