When building a deck, the big material choice is natural wood versus composite. Wood is cheaper upfront with a classic look; composite costs more but needs almost no maintenance.
Cost
Pressure-treated wood is the cheapest decking; cedar costs more for its looks and rot resistance. Composite (a wood-plastic blend) costs roughly double pressure-treated upfront, but you save on years of staining and sealing.
Maintenance and lifespan
Wood needs cleaning and re-staining or sealing every year or two, and lasts 15–20 years with upkeep. Composite needs only occasional cleaning, resists rot and insects, and lasts 25–30 years or more — its low maintenance is the main appeal.
Looks and feel
Many people prefer the natural look and feel of real wood, especially cedar. Composite has improved a lot and now mimics wood grain convincingly, stays splinter-free, and holds its colour, though it can get hot in direct sun.
