Doing it yourself saves labour costs and is satisfying, but the wrong DIY job can cost more than hiring out. Knowing where the line is saves money and headaches.
Good DIY candidates
Painting, basic landscaping, simple flooring like laminate or vinyl plank, assembling and mounting, caulking, weatherstripping, and minor repairs are great DIY projects — low risk, forgiving, and big savings on labour.
Leave these to a pro
Electrical wiring, gas, structural changes, roofing, and major plumbing carry safety, code, and permit requirements — and the cost of getting them wrong (fire, leaks, collapse, failed inspections) far exceeds the labour you'd save. Most jurisdictions also legally require licensed trades for these.
Consider time, tools, and risk
Beyond skill, weigh the time it'll take, the cost of tools you'd buy once, and the consequences of mistakes. A pro is often worth it for jobs that are dangerous, code-regulated, time-sensitive, or where a mistake is expensive to undo.
