A ductless mini-split is a heat pump that delivers heating and cooling through wall-mounted indoor units instead of ducts. It's ideal for homes without ductwork, additions, and rooms that are always too hot or too cold.
How it's set up
An outdoor compressor connects by a small conduit to one or more indoor 'heads,' each controlling its own zone. That zoning means you heat or cool only the rooms in use, which saves energy compared with conditioning the whole house.
Where it shines
Mini-splits are a natural fit for homes with electric baseboard or no ducts, finished attics and basements, garages and workshops, and additions where extending ductwork is impractical. They're quiet and very efficient.
What to consider
The indoor heads are visible on the wall, and multi-zone systems cost more. Sizing and placement matter — an oversized unit short-cycles. A good installer matches capacity to each space.
