House fires spread faster than most people expect, often giving only a couple of minutes to escape. Prevention plus early warning plus a practised plan are what save lives.
Working alarms
Smoke alarms on every level and in bedrooms, tested monthly and interconnected where possible, are the single most important fire-safety measure. Add carbon monoxide alarms where there's a fuel-burning appliance or attached garage.
Reduce hazards
Don't overload outlets or run cords under rugs, keep the dryer lint trap and vent clean, never leave cooking unattended, and keep flammables away from heat. Have heating equipment and chimneys serviced. These cover the most common fire causes.
Plan your escape
Know two ways out of every room, agree on a meeting place outside, and practise the plan with everyone in the home. Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and know how to use it — but never let fighting a fire delay getting out and calling 911.
