Crisp trim makes a whole room look finished. Trim takes more wear than walls and shows brush marks more, so prep and a quality paint matter.
Prep and fill
Clean the trim, fill nail holes and gaps with filler and caulk, and lightly sand glossy old trim so new paint grips. Wipe off dust. Smooth trim starts with smooth prep.
Tape if needed
Tape along the wall and floor edges if your hand isn't steady, pressing the tape down firmly so paint doesn't bleed under it. Many pros cut in freehand with a good angled brush instead.
Use the right paint and technique
Use a durable trim enamel and a quality angled brush. Lay the paint on and tip it off with light strokes in one direction for a smooth finish. Two thin coats beat one thick one, which sags and shows marks. Pull tape while the last coat is slightly wet.
