A torn screen is a cheap, quick fix you can do at the kitchen table. You re-use the existing frame and just replace the mesh, held in by a rubber cord called spline.

Remove the old screen

Pry up the end of the rubber spline in the groove around the frame and pull it out, then lift out the old mesh. Note the spline thickness so you buy matching replacement spline, or re-use it if it's still flexible.

Lay in new mesh

Cut new screen mesh a bit larger than the frame and lay it over the opening. Using a spline roller (a cheap tool with a wheel), roll the spline into the groove to trap the mesh, working around the frame and keeping the mesh taut but not stretched out of square.

Trim

Once the spline is fully seated, trim the excess mesh just outside the spline with a utility knife. The screen should be flat and snug. Reinstall it in the window.
