The best weed control isn't a chemical — it's a thick, healthy lawn that doesn't leave room for weeds to take hold. Get the basics right and weeds become the exception, not the rule.

Thick turf is the defence

Weeds colonize bare and thin spots. Mowing high (taller grass shades out weed seeds), watering deeply but infrequently, fertilizing appropriately, and overseeding thin areas builds dense turf that crowds weeds out naturally.

Spot-treat rather than blanket

For the weeds that do appear, pulling them (especially after rain when soil is soft) or spot-treating is more targeted and less wasteful than blanketing the whole lawn. Get the whole root on perennials like dandelions, or they regrow.

Timing matters

Pre-emergent treatments work before weed seeds sprout, while post-emergent treatments target growing weeds — applying at the wrong time wastes effort. Many regions also have restrictions on lawn herbicides, so check local rules and consider lower-impact methods first.
