Many rural BC homes are on septic rather than municipal sewer. A septic system is low-maintenance but unforgiving when neglected — a failed system is expensive and unpleasant, so a little care goes a long way.

Pump on schedule

The septic tank needs pumping every few years (commonly 3–5, depending on tank size and household) to remove the solids that accumulate. Skipping pumping lets solids carry into and clog the drain field, the costliest part to repair.

Watch what goes down

Only flush human waste and toilet paper. Wipes, grease, chemicals, and excess solids harm the bacteria that break down waste and clog the system. Go easy on harsh cleaners and don't pour fats down the drain.

Protect the drain field

Keep heavy vehicles, structures, and deep-rooted trees off the drain field, and direct surface water and downspouts away from it. Soggy ground or sewage smells over the field are warning signs to call a septic professional.
