A neglected chimney is both a fire risk and a common source of roof leaks. Whether you burn wood or have a gas appliance vented through it, basic maintenance keeps it safe and dry.

Inspect and sweep

Wood-burning chimneys build up creosote, a flammable residue that causes chimney fires. Have the chimney inspected and swept regularly — at least annually for frequent wood burning. Gas appliances need their venting checked too.

Cap and screen

A chimney cap keeps rain, debris, and animals out of the flue. A spark screen reduces the risk of embers landing on the roof. A missing or damaged cap lets water into the chimney where it does slow damage.

Flashing and crown

The flashing where the chimney meets the roof and the concrete crown on top are frequent leak points. Cracked flashing or crown lets water into the roof and chimney structure — inspect and reseal as needed.
