Removing wallpaper is tedious but straightforward. The key is softening the adhesive so the paper comes off cleanly instead of in frustrating little shreds.
Score and soak
Score the wallpaper with a scoring tool so moisture can reach the adhesive, then apply a wallpaper-removal solution or warm water with a sponge or sprayer. Let it soak in to dissolve the glue.
Steam for stubborn paper
A wallpaper steamer makes quick work of stubborn or multiple layers, softening the adhesive with heat. Work in sections and peel with a putty knife, taking care not to gouge the drywall underneath.
Clean the wall
Once the paper is off, wash away all remaining adhesive — leftover glue ruins a new paint or paper job. Let the wall dry, patch any gouges, and prime before painting.
