A programmable or smart thermostat lowers your bills by easing off heating and cooling when you're asleep or away, then bringing the home back to comfort before you notice. Set up well, it pays for itself quickly.

Set back when away and asleep

Program the temperature to drop a few degrees in winter (or rise in summer) overnight and during work hours, then return to comfort before you wake or get home. Even a modest, consistent setback adds up over a season.

Don't overdo the swing

Very large setbacks can make the system work hard to recover and, with heat pumps, can trigger inefficient backup heat. Smaller, steady setbacks are usually more efficient than dramatic ones.

Smart features

Smart thermostats learn your schedule, adjust by phone, and use occupancy and weather data. Some utilities offer rebates. The biggest savings still come from the basics: setting back when you don't need full comfort.
