BC's wildlife — raccoons, squirrels, rats, and more — readily moves into attics, chimneys, and under decks for shelter, especially to den and raise young. Prevention and humane handling protect both your home and the animals.
Remove attractants
Secure garbage and green bins, don't leave pet food out, clean up fallen fruit and birdseed, and remove easy food and water sources. In bear and raccoon country, attractant management is the first and most important step to keep wildlife from settling in.
Seal entry points
Animals exploit gaps: cap the chimney, screen attic and soffit vents, seal openings under decks and sheds, and trim branches that give roof access. Squirrels and raccoons enlarge small gaps, so close them with sturdy materials before they move in.
Humane removal
If an animal is already denning — especially with young — don't just seal it in or out. There may be babies that will die in the wall, and many species are protected. A wildlife control professional can remove them humanely and exclude re-entry. Then seal the access for good.
