A fire extinguisher can stop a small fire from becoming a disaster — but only if it's the right type, within reach, and used correctly. It's a cheap, essential piece of home safety.

Choose the right type

For homes, a multipurpose 'ABC' extinguisher handles ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, and electrical fires — the common household risks. A keep a dedicated one in the kitchen (grease fires) and consider others near the furnace and garage. Check the size is manageable for whoever might use it.

Place and maintain

Mount extinguishers near exits and high-risk areas (kitchen, furnace room, garage), where you can grab one on the way out — not buried in a cupboard. Check the pressure gauge periodically and replace or service units as the manufacturer directs. Disposable ones are replaced when used or expired.

Use the PASS technique

Remember PASS: Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, Sweep side to side. Only fight a small, contained fire with an exit at your back — if it's spreading, get everyone out and call 911 first. Never let fighting a fire trap you.
